I know some of you have been reading this news but I’ll repost this to you guys just for the sake of information sharing. Damn, I though it was real. Seriously, I thought it was damn great and real. And it’s all faked ? How in the hell did they manage to fool us ? ![]()
Here’s the excerpt from Malaysian Insider news for you guys.
From SkyNews
LONDON, Aug 12 — The global television audience of more than three billion people watched in amazement as a series of giant footprints outlined in fireworks proceeded through the night sky from Tiananmen Square to the Bird’s Nest stadium — except they were watching a computer animation.
Even the giant television screens within the stadium itself broadcast the fake images.
Stunned viewers thought they were watching the string of fireworks filmed from above by a helicopter.
But in reality they were watching a 3D graphics sequence that took almost a year to produce.
It even included a “camera shake” to mimic the effect of filming from a helicopter.
The dupe was revealed by China’s Beijing Times. Speaking to the paper, the man responsible for the animation said he was pleased with the result.
“Seeing how it worked out, it was still a bit too bright compared to the actual fireworks,” Gao Xiaolong told the newspaper.
“But most of the audience thought it was filmed live — so that was mission accomplished.”
The designers even added some haziness to simulate the polluted Beijing skyline.
Broadcasters around the world had no choice but to show the footage because it all came from one feed provided by Beijing Olympic Broadcasting — the organisation responsible for filming the games.
The ceremony has also been strongly criticised by architect Ai Weiwei, who helped design the Bird’s Nest stadium.

So who did watch the Olympics fireworks? Seems like not all is fake I think… only parts of it were faked…or is it all of it ? Damn..damn…damn…I still can’t figure it out…anyone might want to point me to the right direction ? Anyway, let me just give you one of the real videos for the Beijing Olympics fireworks.
p/s : I don’t watch it live on TV though. In fact, I haven’t seen any of it? Do I have the right to be mad when the fireworks are faked ? I think I have the right to be mad because a lot of my friends were fooled by it. Care to comment Knizam ? ![]()

I heard that it’s not fake. The fireworks did go up the sky but it was filmed earlier and they used computer to enhance the fireworks and broadcast it to the whole world.
That’s what I heard. Not sure myself. =)

I watched it live on CCTV2 in China and also posted a Google video someone took of the ceremony. Anyhow, does it really matter? To me, it’s even better if it’s animation - less air pollution! Less fire hazards esp during the HOT summer now.

i didn’t watch the opening but if they broadcast it without informing the public that it’s not the real fireworks…i think a lot of people might be angry at them….maybe this is the gimmick that China kept in secret…
on the other point..I agree with you..no fireworks..less dangerous..less pollution !!

I for one don’t give a damn.
And the 90,000 people at the stadium not watching TV look no less enthralled.
This is the Western press taking the usual opportunity to degrade China. It could have spun the news as, China achieved a technological marvel of the fireworks effects.
Would the environmentalists rather millions of dollars be wasted on environmenttaly-unfriendly fireworks?
Granted, China could have issued a disclaimer to warn viewers that the fireworks were enhanced.
We watch $200 million even more fake spectacular movies like Batman, Independence Day.. and we still enjoy it very much. (No, Batman can’t really do that.. and they didn’t really blow up the White House).

“To me, it’s even better if it’s animation - less air pollution! Less fire hazards esp during the HOT summer now”
Ehem, you probably confused whether there were fireworks fired off or just CGI effects, hence you thought it was better - less air pollution.
The fireworks were really fired off, but China decided to feed the broadcasters the CGI effects, duping billions of people watching the opening ceremony ‘live telecast’.
What environmental issue? The fireworks were fired off! Of course, one one the commentator said, “and the 90,000 people at the stadium not watching TV look no less enthralled.”, sure for they watched the real thing on the ground! Only those watching the ‘live telecast’, were duped.
It’s funny when people do not understand the issue, and straightly equate criticisms against China is ‘bashing and degrading China.’
The issue here is honesty. Why only after these ‘revelations’ China tried to explain? Should have issued a disclaimer before hand, yes

bongkerz - Thanks for the correction. This means China pulled a Shanghai switch on both the live and TV audience? In this case, my opinion is thumbs up to China for the CGI and I’m with Jo in terms of Western media trying to do what it does best.
However, I still have a BOO to China for the fireworks. With their creativity (exemplified by that magnificent multi-coloured scroll), I’m sure they’d be able to figure an equally explosive and environmentally-friendly opening gambit. They were probably 50-50 on this decision because a) they invented firewworks, b) it’s Chinese culture and c) it makes a big bang!
Life4Hire - Nice discussion you set off here

thanks KittyCat…everyone has their own thoughts on this fireworks thingy..but I’ll be more than glad if there’s more people commenting on this or come out with the truth about it…
maybe next Olympics the host will provide the audiences with 3D glasses like you’re watching 3D movies…maybe someday fireworks will be banned from Olympics and everyone will rely on China’s first attempt for “faking” fireworks as a standard for world’s health.
