Try this plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/php-shell/
You can easily use linux command from your wordpress dashboard..

agreed….chmod 777 can be used if you use command line style…and recursive into the folder is the way to go…i don’t really edit my theme that much..single post and index should be enough…but i still CHMOD 777

i use winscp because it has support for ssh…mostly i use ssh for work purposes and sftp to transfer file…same as ftp but it’s secure!

what kind of FTP program did you used? It look different.
In filezilla, i just use the command CHMOD 777 and recurse to all it subfolder.
Usually, i olny chmod 777 my theme folder since it make my life easier to edit it anytime.

just do not make a silly thing like chmod all the wordpress file. Haha
